When I contacted Michele Flynn, owner of MIM Enterprises in Melbourne, Australia, she was having some connectivity issues with her ISP. What impressed me the most was how she didn’t let that interfere with her productivity. She hooked her laptop up to her cell phone and it was business as usual. I asked Michele some questions regarding her business and herself and this is what she said.
Why did you become a VA? What lessons have you learned?
I have over 25 years experience as a professional secretary in the legal industry and also as an administrator/bookkeeper in various firms. I wanted a more flexible lifestyle away from the corporate office and strict expectations.
A lesson I have learned is how to use my determination to learn many new technological functions and how to find an answer quickly by forums and/or google search.
Do you have a niche? What services do you provide that might be unique?
I have two niches. My first niche is transcription of digital audio of interviews; focus groups and/or specific reports. My second niche is bookkeeping with Quickbooks or MYOB. I provide assistance to clients who are new to digital recordings and I often provide them with tips on how to record and even which digital recorders to choose from. I am happy to research relevant issues in order to save clients time and improve my experience with any digital audio that is provided.
What characteristics do you most admire in your top clients?
I admire great communication and the ability for the client to explain precisely what they need and be approachable for any clarification. I also appreciate clients who pay on time.

How do you prefer to communicate with clients? Phone, email, chat, combo?
Generally I prefer email contact however it is absolutely fine if a client needs to speak with me on the phone.
How do you stay organized, or what organization tips do you have?
Always believe in Murphys law and do not stress when best laid plans appear to fail. There is always someone worse off. This year I have dealt with 2 desktop change overs due to poorly built desktops which included many hours on the phone troubleshooting. I have also been provided with the ability to quickly work out how to decide if a computer issue is very urgent and problematic and not to hesitate using all the avenues available to me to be provided a replacement.
Has the present economy helped or hurt your business?
I believe that the present economy has helped my business. It has allowed small business owners and savvy business owners to utilise a growing industry in order to value-add to their clients. The present economy has been a win-win situation for my business and has opened doors to new clients.
